Mothers, Kids and Smoking

cigarettesAll of us are have heard about the dangers of smoking while pregnant. Yet, one quarter of all Americans had mothers who smoked during their pregnancy. Hard to believe in this day and age.

According to a new study, smoking while pregnant can be very harmful to your kids as they get older. Not only is there an increased risk to the fetus, but nicotine can affect brain development. These changes can make it very difficult for an adult to quit smoking once they have started.

Doctors recommend kicking the habit as soon as a woman knows she’s pregnant. This can be very difficult indeed. And to make it worse, they should not rely on any type of nicotine products (patch, gum, etc.) to ease the process. These products will have the same affect on their baby as if they were still smoking.

Just another way we can help protect our kids.

Oh Really, Not Enough Sleep For Moms?

tired momNo big surprise here. Do any moms get enough sleep? Too much to do in such a short day!! Below is an actual study of 500 moms where over half of them admitted to not getting enough sleep. Those same moms also believe that they would be better parents if they actually did get more sleep. Hmmm.. maybe we should do something about this - but what?

Find someone else to cook dinner, clean the house, go to work, feed the kids, get them ready for bed. I doubt most moms would want to give up all that - well maybe the cleaning part :)

I guess for now we’ll just have to on as we have been and try to squeeze in a cat nap every once in a while (literally, my cat sleeps about 20 hours a day! - if only)

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Half of U.S. mothers are not getting enough sleep and they believe getting more rest would make them better parents, according to a U.S. study.

A nationwide survey of 500 mothers by research firm Braun Research found 54 percent of respondents said they were not getting enough sleep.

Full-time working mothers were suffering the most with 59 percent saying they were not getting enough sleep. Half of the working mothers said they were getting six or fewer hours sleep a night.

Stay-at-home moms fared better with 48 percent saying they were sleep deficient.

Researchers: Wait 18 Months for Next Baby

On Tuesday, Carla Johnson of the Associated Press reported:

Women can maximize their chances of having healthy babies by spacing their pregnancies at least 18 months but no more than five years apart, researchers say.

The researchers reached that conclusion after an analysis of 67 international studies involving more than 11 million pregnancies.

The analysis found that spacing babies too close together or too far apart raises the risk of complications such as premature births and low birth weight.

It’s an interesting study. Read more.
